What you can reach from Kathmandu in a morning
The Everest region is the headline. A standard Khumbu itinerary lifts off around first light, follows the valley past Lukla and Namche, turns at the head of the glacier for views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam, and returns via a viewpoint landing and a breakfast stop before the day's cloud arrives.
Langtang and Gosaikunda are the shorter, less expensive option, and badly underrated. Langtang valley is barely fifty kilometres north of the city, so the flight is quick, and Gosaikunda's chain of sacred lakes is one of the more striking short routes in the country.
Kathmandu is also the base for practical flying: Lukla transfers when fixed-wing flights back up, sector hops for trekkers who need to recover a schedule, and charter movements to regional airstrips.
