Langtang and Gosaikunda Helicopter Tour

Langtang begins about fifty kilometres north of Kathmandu, which makes it the closest high mountain region to the capital by a wide margin. That proximity is the whole argument for this route: the flying hours are a fraction of a Khumbu itinerary, and the fare follows.

What you get is genuine high-Himalayan flying — glaciated peaks, a deep valley, yak pasture at Kyanjin, and the wall of Langtang Lirung rising more than three kilometres above the valley floor. For travellers who want the experience of a mountain landing without an Everest budget, this is the route.

Gosaikunda adds a different character: a chain of alpine lakes sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, set in bare rock above the treeline, and a major pilgrimage destination during Janai Purnima.

Langtang was among the areas worst affected by the 2015 earthquake, when a landslide destroyed Langtang village. The valley has since been rebuilt, and tourism is a direct part of that recovery. Visitors flying in are contributing to a local economy that has worked hard to come back.

It is worth knowing this before you go. The memorial at Langtang village is part of what the valley is now, and travellers tend to find the flight more meaningful for understanding it.

Departure is early morning from Kathmandu, as with every mountain route out of the valley. The helicopter climbs north over the Shivapuri hills and enters the Langtang valley within about twenty-five minutes.

A typical itinerary lands near Kyanjin Gompa for views of Langtang Lirung and the Langtang glacier, with short ground time. Adding Gosaikunda extends the routing west across the ridge and involves a higher landing at around 4,380 metres, which is more sensitive to weight and conditions.

As on every high-altitude route in Nepal, landings are planned rather than promised. Wind over the ridges, cloud in the valley and aircraft performance at altitude all decide what is possible on the morning.

It is also a sensible fallback when Everest weather closes. If the Khumbu is unflyable but the Langtang side is clear, this route can often still operate.
